Tornada DAO Struggling With Authorities, Governance Forum Offline

It appears that the Discord server and Tornado DAO governance forum that were tied to the crypto mixing service Tornado Cash, which was recently sanctioned, have been disabled.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control of the United States Treasury blacklisted Tornado Cash on Monday. Tornado Cash is a mixing tool that focuses on Ethereum transactions. As a result of the crackdown, cryptocurrency projects across the ecosystem have been struggling to come to terms with the fact that the United States government has, for the very first time, sanctioned a smart contract.

A smart contract is essentially software or computer code. The United States government has never before given its approval to an individual or a group.

The tensions inside the sector were ratcheted up to an even higher level today when, this morning, Dutch police stated that they had arrested a 29-year-old “suspected developer” in Amsterdam in connection with Tornado Cash. This news brought the tensions to an all-time high.

“He is suspected of involvement in concealing criminal financial flows and facilitating money laundering through the mixing of cryptocurrencies through the decentralized Ethereum mixing service Tornado Cash,” the Netherlands Crime Agency (FIOD) said in a statement.

Members of the Tornado Cash DAO, who organize themselves through the use of Discord, are currently struggling to choose how to continue the project. However, when followed in Google Chrome on a desktop computer, the link to the Discord server now leads to an error notice stating that the invite is incorrect.

What will happen to Tornado DAO now?

If it has been removed, this marks the most recent step in an increasingly stringent crackdown on the initiative.

During this time, it appears that the forum that members of Tornado DAO utilized in order to discuss and administer the project has also been taken offline. In the earlier part of this week, following a link that formerly led to a proposal where DAO members were discussing alternative strategies to save the project now leads to a page that displays an error message.

Despite the fact that the DAO forum was removed, the community that runs the project was still able to unanimously adopt a request to put themselves as signatories on Tornado’s $22 million treasury. This was accomplished by adding themselves as signatories on the Tornado treasury.

The author of the proposal stated that the modification would make it simpler to give approval for transactions and that “even if something were to happen to two signers, we would still be able to manage the community fund.”
